Best Dog Food For Your Dog: What You Need To Know
Best Dog Food For Your Dog: What You Need To Know

When buying dog food from the store, it’s important to first check the label for ingredients. The ingredients will be listed in the order of the amount from highest to lowest. Ideally, you’ll want a meat to be listed first, such as chicken, lamb, or beef. Eggs may also be high on the list. Grains such as wheat and flour should be low on the list or not appear at all. Check the bag to make sure the food is formulated for your dog’s age, breed, and weight, and ask your veterinarian about appropriate serving sizes.
Unfortunately, reading the label may not be enough to determine if a dog food is healthy. Many manufacturers know how to manipulate labels to make food sound more healthy and appealing. They don’t, for instance, have a good way of indicating whether the food has more meat protein than grain protein. Also, terms like “human-grade” and “70 percent organic” don’t have legal definitions. They’re basically meaningless.

There are tons of recipes for home cooked dog food online, but you should definitely ask your veterinarian before sharing human foods with your dog. Do your research and determine which foods are healthy and which are toxic. Avoid artificial flavors, preservatives, additives, and anything that isn’t whole, natural, and organic. Wash all foods, too, as they may be treated with pesticides or herbicides. It’s best to get food from a place that you trust to not treat food with chemicals, as these are toxic to dogs.
Ask your veterinarian or nutritionist about appropriate amounts of foods to serve your dog. Some healthy foods are not good in large quantities. Blueberries, for example, are great for dogs and full of vitamins, nutrients, and antioxidants. Too many of them, however, can cause a tummy ache and diarrhea.
It is important to note that some veterinarians believe that cooking food destroys some of the valuable nutrients that the ingredients contain, even though it kills some of the potentially harmful bacteria. Again, do your research. It is up to you to make appropriate decisions about what your dog eats based on your own knowledge and the knowledge of experts that you trust.

One of the so-called benefits of store bought food is that it is cheap, though there are several homemade dog food recipes that can be made just as cheaply as store bought food. Also, because you don’t really know the ingredients quantities or where they are sourced from, it’s hard to tell exactly what’s in your dog’s food. Pet food recalls happen all the time, and dogs do get sick when ingredients are contaminated.
If you must feed your dog store bought food, consult your veterinarian and make sure it is the best quality you can find. Keep in mind that there is no reason you can’t add certain healthy human foods to your dog’s store bought food, as well. These can provide a much-needed health boost.
This is an update on a story that touched so many of you.
ABC-7 first told you about Karrae last week. He is a dog that disappeared for 10 days and was found by his owners in horrible condition.
"I can't even imagine what he suffered during those 10 days he was gone," said Alejandra Castrellon.
For eight years Castrellon has been caring for her dog Karrae.
"His name actually stands for gods golden angel in Irish," Castrellon said.
A few days before Christmas Karrae went missing from his home in Socorro.
"I would get off of work at around 11 and by the time I would get home it was midnight and I would canvas the area driving yelling out his name," Castrellon told ABC-7.
After 10 days of being gone Castrellon's brother found the pup close to the neighborhood.
"My brother said he couldn't even stand by himself, he was very skinny, his rear was full of blood and very inflamed," Castrellon said.
A quick trip to the veterinarian revealed some bad news.
"He had been sodomized. He had been burned at close proximity, like they got a lighter and they were burning his fur," Castrellon said.
Karrae also suffered from a slashed leg. The dog was also muzzled so tight he broke a tooth and he was dragged on the pavement causing blisters on his paws.
Castrellon says Karrae hasn't been the same since.
"He's always shaking, he gets nervous, he can't be in the car," Castrellon said.
After an emergency operation Karrae is recovering slowly but he still has a long road ahead.
"The doctor said he was showing signs of renal failure and liver failure," Castrellon said.
Castrellon will continue to care for Karrae.
She says the bills have been adding up but she's thankful for the support she has gotten from the community.
"Just to know that people actually do care ... it makes me feel good because if we actually all speak up this wouldn't happen to any pets at all," Castrellon said.
The Sheriff's Office is currently investigating this case. They say if you have any information you can contact them at (915) 538-2292.
If you would like to help with Karrae's medical expenses, the family has set up a GoFundMe account.

The FDA has said that since 2007 they have received almost 5,000 complaints of dogs becoming sick after eating treats from China and there are more than 1,000 cases where a dog died after consuming them. The actual reason for the illnesses and deaths has yet to be determined. Consumers that are concerned for the health and well being of their canine family members have been pressuring the retail giants to do the right thing and remove products from their shelves that are made in China. Petco plans to have the items removed from all stores and online by the end of the year, and Petsmart has made plans for total removal by March 2015.
Petco made the move first, quickly followed by Petsmart. Petco’s CEO Jim Myers said “We’ve been following the FDA warnings and related customer concerns closely, and we’ve been actively reducing our China-made assortment and expanding our American-made offerings for several years now,” said Myers. “We know the FDA hasn’t yet identified a direct cause for the reported illnesses, but we decided the uncertainty of the situation outweighs the lack of actual proof. It has taken some time and careful thought to get to this point, but we’re proud to make the change and we believe our customers will be pleased with it as well.” You can read the entire statement from Petco here.
The FDA keeps a page on their site dedicated to news and information regarding jerky pet treats that is a wealth of information into what exactly is going on here. As we have been encouraging our readers for quite some time, the best course of action for concerned dog parents is to READ THE LABELS of everything you give your dog. Somewhere on the label (and it could be hidden or hard to find), it will tell you if a product is made in China. Be wary of products that say “Packaged in the USA” or contain other words that may make a consumer think the entire product is from the USA. It is our recomendation to avoid any and all food and treat products for your dog that come from China. Make sure you know exactly what goes into your dog’s system, just as you would for yourself and your family.
Better yet, make your OWN dog treats! You can purchase a dehydrator for under $100.00 and make your own organic chicken jerky or dehydrated vegetable treats so that you know exactly where your treats come from. We have a whole section on our site of recipes we have created and tested in our own kitchens, too. Find them all here.
If you see products from China on the shelves at your neighborhood pet store or grocer, don’t be afraid to ask them to please stop selling them—or you will not patronize them. The proof is here today… consumer pressure works!

A one-year-old pit bull was rescued in Kentucky after having been found tied to a fence with his snout duct-taped shut. A reward is being offered for information on who did this.
It is believed he was being used as a bait dog because he is covered in bite marks.
He clearly, in my opinion, was a bait dog and this is not the first time being thrown into a ring,” said Rebecca Eaves, director of
“Basically, a dog got him here, broke his canines and pushed them in.”
The pup, now named Frodo, is being treated at the Blue Pearl Animal Hospital, where he is being pumped full of antibiotics and painkillers. One of his legs will have to be amputated because of injuries, but staff say he’s lucky to be alive.
It’s a shame what they do to these animals, and I’m emotional because I’m sick of this,” Eaves said. “This is a sweet, sweet puppy, that was just shown a life of horror.”
Frodo was found on the 2600 block of West Kentucky Street in Louisville. Investigators have no idea who tied him to the fence, and are urging the public to come forward.
Right now, we want to plead to the community,” said Donald Robinson with “You can remain anonymous. Please call our tip line, let us know if you’ve seen anything, if you’ve seen this particular animal out in that particular neighborhood.”
The Humane Society of the United States is offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the individual(s) involved.
We want to put this person behind bars,” Eaves stated. “Dog-fighting is rampant here in Louisville and everybody needs to be serious about it. Don’t be afraid. Turn them in.”

Keep your dog safe with a wooden spoon
Yes. I train my small dogs just like I would train large dogs. That includes jumping on people/scratching at their legs for attention. Just as one example, my family's old yorkie scratched up my elderly grandfather's leg pretty bad. The skin of elderly people is very delicate and takes longer to heal. That was my wake up call for taking the training of small dogs just as seriously as big dogs.
I think a lot of people are just ignorant to it. All the biting and jumping and stuff can be cute with little dogs, but it's just not worth it in the long run and you are doing them and others a disservice.
The wirehaired dachshund is one of the best hunting/tracking dogs you can get. Better than many blood hounds. Some say they are the absolute best for tracking deer, but that is obviously up for debate.
There is a guy in my state that has 2, and when people can't track their deer, he brings them out there for free. He just wants his dogs to have fun, and they love working. People normally pay him in free deer meat or whatever.
It's actually my go to example when people call small dogs useless.
Once I was dog-sitting a tiny fluffy thing for a friend. 7 am, I am barely awake. I let the dog out to pee on the fenced in patio--checking to make sure he can't fit thru the crack in the gate first. I turn to start my coffee, turn back towards the door--little fucker is gone.
I chased him all over the neighborhood barefoot, sans bra, and without underwear under my night shirt. It took almost an hour to catch that little rat. If only I thought of duct taping a spoon to the damn thing.
Oh I couldn't agree more. This is a pretty big part of my argument when people claim small dogs are useless, as they use their pitbull as a companion animal. Nothing wrong with that by the way. Just pointing out that they are getting the same "usefulness" out of their larger breed as someone would out of a Pomeranian for the most part.
I like to ask them, "So what exactly does your dog do?"
I think it's just people looking for some form of unearned superiority.
I love dogs of all sizes. I don't see why there needs to be so much hate for small dogs!
I'm pretty sure most domesticated dogs, if untrained, are pretty damn useless. If you told my great danes to go hunt the boar right in front of them (something Great Danes were bred for) they'd probably try to play with it, then throw a doggy tantrum about how it's not plaaaaaying with them. And yes, they do tantrum... foot stomping, yelling, throwing themselves on the ground, the whole show. At this point a lot of domesticated dogs have had most of what made them useful bred out of them, save for certain tics like dachshunds being trackers and German Shepards being terrifyingly intelligent (we owned a house where the previous owners had a neglected Shepard... there were spots in our yard where you could see that he had eaten the outside wall)
Nothing is worse than people who do that. It's not cute that your Yorkie bit my hand Kathy, if my great dane bit you like how your Yorkie bit me you'd LOSE your hand. Train your damn dogs people.
Seriously, and none of those yappy small dogs have ANY leash manners. I'm still dealing with residual anxiety surrounding dogs after a dog attack, and I almost got hit by a car because someone's shitty yappy dog ran at me... next thing I know, I'm standing in the street and a car's coming. I'm a lot better now after working on exposure therapy, but those small yappy dogs are the hardest for me to be around because they're so pushy and often times aggressive
In the dark of the winter season, time starts to slow down. We just finished with the Christmas season: spending time with family, and giving thanks to Jesus Christ our Lord.

After several dollars were spent on our boxer "Willie"; he obliterated $10 toys in 15 minutes. Then my wife got bored and Willie started playing with a water bottle.
Like most dog owners, I love spoiling my little pup every chance I get. Unfortunately, my bank account isn’t as big a fan of that as she is when I rack up a long receipt of items at the pet store.
That’s why I love stumbling upon DIY dog life hacks like the amazing tricks below to help me stay more within my budget. Sure, I’ll still splurge on an adorable collar or toy at the store, but these ideas have definitely given my finances a much-needed breather.
Whether it’s a brilliant way to keep their health in check in between vet visits or make both of your lives less stressful, or just a you will both have big smiles on your faces with any of these amazing options.
Take a look at the DIY dog life hacks and let us know if we missed any that you’ve used to make you and your pooch happy campers.i love my dogs.
If you’ve ever wondered who makes the most faithful partners, it seems that there is an answer to that question.
While dogs are praised for their faithful nature, it seems that their owners share the same trait.
A survey by a dating website for married people who are looking for affairs has revealed that those who own dogs are the most loyal in relationships – or least likely to cheat.

The dating site, IllicitEncounters.com found that just 10% of its members own a dog.
While people who own cats are more likely to cheat with 25% of those surveyed owning a cat.
Out of the 700 people surveyed, 16% owned a fish, 13% had a gerbil or hamster, while rabbit and reptile owners were neck and neck at 11%.

Meanwhile, there were 14% who had a different type of pet or simply had none at all.
Site spokesman Christian Grant said, ‘There has already been a plethora of scientific studies that claim that owning a dog, or dogs, makes you happier and healthier, and now you can add loyalty to that list.’

Flyball is a team sport for dogs and their handlers. It was invented in California in the late 70's. It is loud, full of energy, and fun for all involved - the dogs, handlers, judges, and spectators. Dogs of all shapes, sizes, breeds, colors, and ages can participate in flyball. Dogs with high drive for ball are in particular very suitable for Fly Ball Training.
The course consists of a starting line, 4 hurdles spaced 10 feet apart and a box. The first hurdle is 6 feet from the start line and the box is 15 feet from the last hurdle, for a 51 foot overall length. At tournaments, the start line is outfitted with a line of red, yellow, and green lights, similar to what you would see at a drag race.
It is best to think of Flyball as the following chain of events:
  1. Release the dog
  2. Jump over first hurdle
  3. Jump over second hurdle
  4. Jump over third hurdle
  5. Jump over fourth hurdle
  6. Approach box
  7. Hit box to release tennis ball
  8. Catch tennis ball
  9. Turn
  10. Return over fourth hurdle
  11. Return over third hurdle
  12. Return over second hurdle
  13. Return over first hurdle
  14. Cross finish line

Though all puppies are incredibly cute, not all are a good fit for your lifestyle. With the proper research and preparation, you can find a dog who will be a great addition to the family. The decision to adopt is far too important to be based on puppy-love-at-first-sight. The incredible range of breeds, exercise needs and temperaments makes it imperative that you do your homework. All puppies eventually grow to be adults, so choosing a dog who fits your lifestyle is the best way to ensure that your decision won’t end in regret. After taking the time to research and compare dog breeds, you’ll have a better sense about which puppies are likely to grow up to be couch potatoes and which might make good jogging partners.

Do Your Research

If you are curious about different breeds, start by getting a book that provides an overview or by reviewing the more than 200 articles on our site about dogs both big and small.
Ask experts to share their take on breeds you are interested in. Veterinarians work with various breeds every day and have vast insight into which ones may be suitable for your lifestyle. Dog trainers are another excellent source of information about the needs and behaviors associated with different breeds.

Consider Size, Breeds and Needs

Though Great Danes love to cuddle, they quickly grow too large to sit in your lap and can clear off a table with a flick of a tail. Due to his short legs, a Dachshund may have trouble keeping up with you on a jog. It’s important to consider how a puppy will fit into your lifestyle when he becomes an adult.
Grooming and exercise needs should be another critical part of the decision. Dogs in the herding group typically require lots of exercise and attention. Other breeds, such as dogs with very long hair, have some fairly intense grooming needs.
In your research, you’ll find that some breeds are predisposed to certain health issues, like hip dysplasia. Mixed-breed dogs may be less likely to have these types of issues than purebreds, but this isn’t always the case. If you’re considering a particular breed, ask your veterinarian which medical conditions you should know about.

Do a Background Check

Finding a reputable breeder or rescue group is essential to locating a healthy, well-socialized puppy. If you’re searching for a purebred dog, ask your vet or local breed club to point you in the right direction. Breed-specific rescue organizations are also a great source for adopting a purebred dog.
If possible, you’ll want to meet the puppy’s parents and siblings, and see the breeding facility. It’s well worth the time and effort to learn about your puppy’s background and confirm that he comes from a healthy environment.
Where pet store puppies are concerned, it’s often impossible to check up on a particular puppy’s parents or background. Unfortunately, a percentage of the doggies in pet store windows come from puppy mills.
Adopting a puppy from a shelter or rescue organization can be extremely rewarding, though it may be impossible to learn much about a rescue puppy’s background or medical history. But these types of organizations typically offer other important benefits, such as health screenings, microchipping and vaccinations.

Know What to Look For

It’s important to have your puppy examined by a veterinarian as soon as possible. Ideally, this should be done before you bring your new family member home for the first time. Fortunately, breeders, shelters and rescue groups often provide paperwork verifying that your puppy’s been examined by a veterinarian, treated for parasites and has had at least one round of vaccinations. Here are a few things to check for when you meet your puppy:
  • Make sure your puppy looks alert and aware, not lethargic.
  • Check for a little fat around your puppy’s rib cage. He should be well fed.
  • Inspect his coat. There shouldn’t be any bald patches or dry, flaky skin.
  • Watch your puppy walk. A healthy puppy should walk and run normally, without limping.
  • Check the eyes, ears and nose. They should be relatively clean with no discharge.
  • Toss a toy or ball. His eyes should follow the toy.
  • Watch for coughing, sneezing or difficulty breathing. These could be signs of illness.
  • Clap your hands. Your puppy should turn to look at you when you make a loud noise behind him.

Observe Your Puppy’s Personality

Choosing a puppy with a good disposition can help ensure a lifetime of happiness and friendship. By knowing what to look for and paying close attention, you can learn a lot about your puppy’s temperament during a short visit.
1. Watch your puppy as he plays with his littermates. This is a good way to determine how your puppy may get along with other dogs later in life. A puppy who shows a healthy interest in playing, yet eases up when a littermate yelps, will most likely socialize well with other dogs.
2. Gauge how your puppy interacts with people. Ideally, you’ll be able to observe him as he encounters people of differing ages and sexes. Puppies should be curious and interested in people. A puppy who cowers or urinates in fear may be poorly socialized and difficult to train.
3. Roll your puppy on his back for a minute. Puppies who struggle excessively or become aggressive may have dominance issues. A well-adjusted puppy may wiggle a little but will eventually relax and become submissive.
4. Hold your puppy, touching his ears, mouth and paws. Puppies should be comfortable with being handled. If your puppy becomes aggressive or tries to get away, he may not be the kind of dog who likes to lie with you on the couch or allow you to trim his nails.
These are just a few of the indicators that can help you gauge whether a particular puppy is a good fit for you. For more advice on picking the right pooch, go to the Dog Breed Guide section on our site.
